Faith, belief and action

The way to eternal life is belief in Jesus, and those who believe show their belief through the behavior. Jesus says we are to be perfect as He is perfect, knowing we will fail but our part in faith is to allow him to perfect us.

Temptation and avoiding sin

Sin is disobeying God, and He hates it and it leads to death. If we want to live, we need to be born again and to have the Holy Spirit live in us and change us, so that we want to say no to sin.

The love of Christ in us

Paul's description of love in 1 Corinthians 12 which is so familiar to many through the Marriage service is often misunderstood to be about how we should love, when, in reality we are incapable of living and loving in this way on our own. Only the love of Christ can do this in us.

A life well lived

When we look back on our lives or stop to take stock, how do we gauge if we are living well? The measure as seen in the life of Gideon is whether we respond to God's call on our lives, and then whether we follow through in His strength.

Hearing, receiving and acting on the Word of God

Jesus reveals himself as Messiah and Christ

When Jesus read the words of Isaiah 61 and declared that He fulfilled them, he declared himself both Messiah (Hebrew) and Christ (Greek). And by omitting the final line of Isaiah's prophetic word he told his hearer what type of king he would be.

The Wedding of the Lamb

Isaiah fortells the end of the age in terms of a wedding and Zion (the church) as the bride. Jesus performs the first of His miracles at a wedding, supplying wine, in a foreshadowing of shedding His blood to wash His bride, the church in preparation for His union with the church at the end of time.

Christ brings justice

Isaiah says that Christ will bring justice to the earth, but with so much injustice were Isaiah or Jesus mistaken. No, Christ came to take on the justice of God for sinful humanity, and if we will trust Christ to bear our punishment for us, then we can be bringers of justice in this world.

Unwrapping the gift of hope

Christmas is the answer to a problem. The problem is that we are born into the world, thinking we are the center of everything and nothing we do can change that. The problem can only be fixed when we make Christ the center.

Accepting the real Messiah on His terms

Before the birth of Christ, many in Israel were preparing for the 'wrong' Messiah  - and even the song of praise His mother Mary sang shows some misunderstanding of who He would be. This Advent we need to prepare for the real Messiah.

The Holy God of wrath, justice and love

There are two very common and equally erroneous views of God. The 'Old Testament' God of wrath and justice, and the 'New Testament' God of affirming love. But the truth is that God is Holy and Just, and Loving, but the only way to understand this paradox is through the life and sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.

A church that will storm the gates of hell?  - 11am

Jesus promised Peter that on his confession that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God, He would build His church and the gates of hell will not stand against it. We need to understand that if we confess Christ and trust Him for everything, we will be built into a church which will storm the gates of hell.

Complacency is dangerous

Complacency on a human level can lead to disasters such as the huge loss of life when the 'unsinkable' Titanic sank with not enough lifeboats for the majority of passengers. More serious still is the spiritual complacency which means we don't warn others, or heed the warning ourselves of the impending disaster of not trusting in Christ.

Anxiety, fear and thanksgiving

Jesus tells His followers not to be anxious about anything (it's a command not a request!), but how can we stop our anxiety which comes from fear? The answer lies in remembering God's provision and promises, leading to thanksgiving, especially for our salvation in Christ.

Are you prepared?

The scriptures which refer to the end of time may appear puzzling in their detail, but their message is clear: the end is coming (we don't know when), it wont be pleasant for all (Jesus says there will be a division of those who He knows), and we had better be ready. Only faith in what Christ has done for us will get us through.

The truth can hurt

The truth often hurts. It was painful for Peter to have Jesus tell him to 'get behind me Satan' , and if we honestly examine ourselves in the light of James writing, it will become painfully clear that we often show partiality. At first sight hearing Jesus say we must take up our cross to follow Him is also a painful truth, but the good news is that's the way which leads to life.

Love and obedience

After Jesus had displayed the love and power of God through great miracles the Pharisees could only criticize the disciples for not keeping the traditions of the elders.
